Features of LocationIdentifier Mashup block:
- Detect the name of countries/cities mentioned in the news summary
- Retrieve the longitude & latitude based on the countries/cities’ name
- Returns the output to Microsoft Virtual Earth for the purpose of plotting its location

Updates on VENews

Good day to Imagine Cup Judges & everyone whom are giving your support for PlanetKY, we are happy to present to you the updates that we have made to VENews!
- We have added our PlanetKY’s logo on our VENews application
- We have re-grouped our environmental related issues into 3 different categories
- Environmental Issue
- These are the same set of options that we have in previous version of VENews, except for the addition of Swine Flu news.
- Environmental Solution
- New category! Previously, we brought up environmental related issues to our users, to raise their awareness. Now we also want to get them aware of what other countries or organization are actually doing to ensure environmental sustainability.
- Environmental Event
- New category! We want to make VENews to not only be a mashup application which keep people updated and aware of their surrounding environment, we want to make it even something bigger ;)
- We want to also make it into a platform which brings together people whom want to play a part in ensuring environmental sustainability – be it individuals or organizations – we want to gather environmental related event news and plot them on the Microsoft Virtual Earth for them!
- Environmental Issue
- We have added a loading bar to appear after users’ selection of environmental related news, to indicate that VENews is loading.
- We have also added the filtering of continents to further enhance our users’ experience, making it convenient for users whom only want to look into environmental related issues in a continental view. We provide filtering of all 7 continents:
- Africa
- Antarctica
- Asia
- Australia
- Europe
- North America
- South America

We have made several changes to further enhanced our web service on the backend side, which is used by our unique mashup block, the LocationIdentifier.
- We have also intensively tested our VENews application to ensure its usability and enhance its performance. We allow it to work faster and have a faster respond rate upon selection of environmental related news categories.

PlanetKY on SG Imagine Cup Award Ceremony!

Yesterday PlanetKY attended the SG Imagine Cup award ceremony and have received trophies, certificates and some microsoft product as an reward.
We are very very proud to be able to represent Singapore to go to the world stage and fight for the championship.
We will upload the picture a soon as possible when we get the photograhps. Do stay tune :)

PlanetKY has a good news to share with you guys! :D
Our team has managed to move on to round 3, the finals! We are ranked top 6 in the world now! :D
We would like to thanks all of you for your support! Without the support from all of you, we could never get a chance to go to Cairo, Egypt, to share our idea & our VENews application with the whole world!
Now we are one more step closer to solving one of the world's toughest problem - Ensure Environmental Sustainability - we will try our best to get as many people's attention to be alert on environmental issues as much as possible! ;)

Simple tutorial to create Mash Up (Screenshots available)

Step 1: Drag a RSS block from the Block colum to the stage.
Step 2 : Double click on the RSS block on the stage, and key in the URL of the RSS feed that you want to see. After finish, click "OK" button.
Step 3 : Search for locationIdentifier above the block column.
Step 4 : Drag the LocationIdentifier block to the stage and link RSS block to LocationIdentifier block.
Step 5 : Double click on LocationIdentifier on the stage, then select description, title and link from the RSS. After that, click the "OK" button.
Step 6 : After that drag the Virtual Earth block to the stage and link LocationIdentifier block to Virtual Earth block.
Step 7 : Double click on the Virtual Earth block on the stage, then select Latitude, Longitude, title and description from LocationIdentifier block output. After that click on the "OK" button.
Step 8 : Then it's done! It's Simple and easy to do it! After that just click on the "RUN" button on the top left of the stage to test the mashup application!

It took us some time to think of the blog's theme line:
Come & change the world with PlanetKY!
I personally think that it is very true. Why?
First of all, to introduce VENews, the mashup created by us, the PlanetKY.
We name our MashUp system, VENews. Its actual name is Virtual Earth News. Some people might choose to call it "Very Environmental News" since it actually suits our system well also. Its pronunciation is similar to Venus.
VENews is developed to show environmental news such as air pollution, water pollution, earthquakes, acid rain and floods which happened to our motherland, the Earth.
We plot the locations of the environmental news on the Virtual Earth. In this way, everyone would have a clear overview and could know what has happened to our Earth.
To have an overview of it, like for example, where does more of the air pollution news is coming from - we are able to track down the source of pollution and with everyone's help, we could solve it!
Every environmental problem solved is going to protect our Earth and enhance its life, and also, to improve everyone's life & health (polluted air would never be healthier than clean air!).
Everyone, let's support us, the PlanetKY, and our mashup application, the VENews!
